Galata
info / program
Galata
was a district of Constantinople (today's Istanbul ), located at the northern shore of the Golden Horn, the inlet which separates it from the historic peninsula of old Constantinople . The Golden Horn is crossed by several bridges, most notably the Galata Bridge . The medieval citadel of Galata was a colony of the Republic of Genoa between 1273 and 1453. The famous Galata Tower was built by the Genoese in 1348 at the northernmost and highest point of the citadel. Galata and the adjoining district of Beyoglu (Pera) are very different in appearance to the old city. Centred around the Galata Tower and with steep roads climbing up to Beyoglu, this neighbourhood preserves the features of an architecture influenced by earlier European models. Europe’s second oldest subway, Tunel, curiously also is the world’s shortest. At the upper end of the Tunel is the beginning of Istiklal Street. Apart from a re-instated historic tramline, it is a pedestrian-only street, surrounded by consulate buildings.
